What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by a person's breathing stopping for 10 seconds or longer during sleep. It is a serious condition that can significantly threaten overall health. It commonly occurs in individuals who have gained weight or have reduced muscle tone, especially when poor sleeping posture is also present. In such cases, the airway narrows, making breathing difficult during sleep. In some instances, breathing may stop altogether.

Sleep apnea also prevents a person from entering the deep sleep stage known as REM sleep, which is essential for proper rest and recovery of both the brain and the body. People with sleep apnea often experience problems such as snoring, teeth grinding (bruxism), insomnia, headaches, and poor posture. They typically wake up feeling tired and remain sleepy throughout the day.

Patients with sleep apnea are often advised to use a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine during sleep. This device helps improve oxygen intake by delivering pressurized air. However, due to comfort issues and difficulties with regular use, many patients find it challenging to tolerate CPAP therapy.

What Is a Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD)?

Today, one of the most commonly used treatments for snoring is Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD). It is worn only at night and can be easily inserted and removed. The recommended age range for using a MAD is between 18 and 65 years. Being edentulous (having no natural teeth) or wearing complete dentures does not necessarily prevent a patient from using a MAD.

A MAD works by positioning the jaw and surrounding soft tissues in an optimal alignment, helping to keep the airway open during sleep. This allows for easier and higher-quality breathing throughout the night. As a result, breathing becomes more comfortable, teeth grinding can be reduced or eliminated, and snoring decreases significantly.

Many patients notice improvements from the very first night of use. Snoring and symptoms of sleep apnea may be greatly reduced, and sleep quality often improves. Mandibular Advancement Devices are easy to use, more economical than many alternative treatments, and do not require surgery. They are custom-made for each patient and are lightweight and portable. Due to their convenience and effectiveness, many of our patients report high satisfaction with their MAD.
